Board Members
The HKA Board is comprised of 12 Directors: 2 Founder, 4 Elected, 4 Appointed and 1 Co-opted Member.
The following are the Directors in alphabetical order:
Richard Barton
BA (Hons) in Politics and Economics from Durham University, UK. Richard is Managing Partner, Asia (ex Japan) of Kreab Gavin Anderson, a global corporate and financial communications and public affairs advisory firm. After ten years in London, working in both investment banking and financial communications, he moved to Singapore in 2000 and Hong Kong in early 2003. For twelve years he was an officer in the British Army Reserve Forces. He has two daughters at the school.Paul Bernard
B.A. from Holy Cross College and MBA from Stanford. Paul has been with Goldman Sachs for 15 years, 12 of those years in Hong Kong. He is currently a partner in the firm and Co-Director of Pan Asia Investment Research, in which position he manages approximately 280 people in 8 countries. He has two children at the school.Susan Jung Choi
B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University. She worked for Chevron USA Marketing before moving to Hong Kong in Construction Project Management and as an Environmental Engineer. Her latest position was working as Hong Kong Academy's Admissions Coordinator for two years. She and her family have been living in Hong Kong for the past 15 years with a brief stint in Korea. She has three children at the school.Ben Frankel (Founder)
Ben, a U.S. attorney resident in Hong Kong for the past 14 years, co-founded Hong Kong Academy in July 2000 and served as its Administrative Director until August 2006 and Chairman of the Board of Management until May 2007. He holds a Masters degree and completed Ph.D. studies in Art History from the University of Chicago, a J.D. from the University of California School of Law, and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Prior to launching Hong Kong Academy, Ben served on the boards of the Ezekiel Abraham School and the United Jewish Congregation of Hong Kong. His daughter was one of the three “founding students” at HKA.Julian Gooding
Julian Gooding has been a member of the Board of Trustees since May 2010, and is chairman of the Trustees Committee of the Board. Julian was born and educated in England, but has lived in Hong Kong since 2001. Julian is a qualified lawyer in both England and Hong Kong, and works for a Bank as a financial services lawyer. Julian is married and has four children, three of whom are now enrolled with Hong Kong Academy. Julian enjoys Wii sports, trying to maintain a lawn, and Maths homework.Robyn Joseph
Robyn has been a consultant in the field of issues and crisis management for twenty years. Robyn’s particular areas of expertise are industrial incidents with both environmental and occupational health and safety implications; and complex legislative and legal situations, such as incidents that emerge through whistle-blower and media rumour, that threaten corporate reputation. Her role is to assess risk; then to implement strategies that minimise risk through systems design and executive training. Robyn has lived in Hong Kong since 1996. She has been a member of the Hong Kong Academy community since September 2002. She has a son and a daughter at the school.Sean A. Kelly
Mr. Kelly joined Modern Terminals in Aug 1999. After five-and-a-half years in the capacity of Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Kelly was appointed as CEO of the company with effect on 1 April 2005. Mr. Kelly has more than 25 years of experience in the transportation industry. Prior to joining Modern Terminals, he was with American President Lines (APL), where he held a number of management positions, including postings in Asia as APL's Managing Director in the Philippines and in Taiwan. The latter position involved direct responsibility for APL’s operations in Hong Kong and China. In his last position for APL, he had global responsibility as Vice President of Terminal Operations. Mr. Kelly holds a BA in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame, and he has served on a number of international transportation company boards.Preneet Malhotra
Preneet was until 2008 the CEO of UTVs Interactive world wide business. Prior to which she was the COO and CFO for Electronic Arts Asia from 2004, and was the director of the Strategic Planning & Development at A.S. Watson & Co. Ltd since 2001. Preneet worked as the Senior Director at Gap, Inc., San Francisco CA, Gap US Capital Investments and Outlet from 1998 - 2000. She worked at PepsiCo, Inc/Tricon Global Restaurants from 1992 – 1998, in various capacities ; the Director at the Finance and Operations Planning department at Kentucky Fried Chicken, Louisville, KY from 1998 – 1996;the Director of International Strategic Planning at PepsiCo Food Systems, Dallas, TX from 1995 – 1996; the Manager of Cost Containment at PepsiCo, Inc., Purchase, NY from 1992 - 1994. From 1988 - 1992 Preneet worked as a consultant at the Health care practice group at the William M. Mercer, Inc.William M. Mercer, Stamford CT. She obtained her MBA Finance from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in 1987 and B.A. Economics (Hons) at Delhi University in 1985.
Stephanie M. Oana
A.B. in Chemistry from Harvard/Radcliffe College and J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. Stephanie practiced international corporate finance, project finance and securities law for 14 years in New York, Tokyo and San Francisco with Debevoise & Plimpton, Brown & Wood and Morrison & Foester. She served on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations in California, including Redwood Day School, Lutheran Social Services of Northern California and the New Century Chamber Orchestra. She moved to Hong Kong in January 2008 and has two children at the school.Teresa Richman (Founder)
Teresa has twenty years experience as an educator, administrator and school psychologist. She co-founded the Hong Kong Academy and led its education program from inception in 2000 until 2006. Prior to founding HKA she was involved in the development of other educational organizations in Hong Kong. She has a B.S. in Education from the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury and a M.S. in Educational Psychology as well as a Professional Certificate in School Psychology from Queen's College. The Richmans are currently living outside of Hong Kong.Bill Rosensweig
BA Hobart College, MBA Boston College, Professional Chef Degree, Cambridge School of Culinary Arts. Bill Rosensweig and his family moved to Hong Kong and joined the Hong Kong Academy community in 2008. They have two children at HKA. Prior to moving to Hong Kong they lived in London for three years, although they are originally from the US. Bill is currently the Managing Director for Brown Brothers Harriman (Hong Kong) Limited (BBH). Prior to joining BBH in 2001 he was a Senior Manager at KPMG Consulting. Bill currently serves as a corporate Board Director for two BBH subsidiaries and is a Member/Chair of numerous senior management committees addressing areas of Strategic Planning, Budgeting/Finance, Operations, Risk Management, and Corporate Governance.Edgar Saravia
B.S. Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and M.S. Management Engineering from the University of Bridgeport. Edgar has been with the World Bank Group for 11 years, 2 of those years with its private sector arm, IFC, in Hong Kong. He manages IFC’s infrastructure advisory business in East Asia and the Pacific. Prior to Hong Kong he has lived in Europe, the Middle East, North America and Latin America, including his native country Bolivia. He has three children at school.Joe Zorn
B.S. and M.S. from the University of Illinois. Joe has been in Hong Kong for 16 years; moving here in 1994 with the U.S. based environmental company, Waste Management Inc., who he was with for 24 years in various positions. His latest position is as Chief Operating Officer for Veolia Environmental Services Asia and the Middle East. Joe has been with the French based Veolia Environmental Services for 10 years and is responsible for operations in Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, UAE, Qatar and Egypt and business development throughout south Asia, India and The Middle East. Prior to the assignment in Hong Kong, he has been based in The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. (California, Texas, New York, Illinois). Joe has a son at the school.
